Transmission Fluid
Transmission Fluid
OK folks, I'm getting close to daily driver status on my 63 4 door. 170 with a Merc-o-Matic. Ordered a Trans pan gasket, after finding out the filter is cleaned and re-used. So we come to fluid. My research indicates in 63 they used M2C-33D fluid which was whale oil based. This seems to be called type A in some sources. In 67 I think, the switch was made to type F. This was due to the outlawing of whale oil. So, today, do I want to switch to type F? I am leaning toward this solution as it "grabs" better than other fluids according to my research. This trans likely was never rebuilt, and has who knows what fluid in it now. Thanks in advance for all your sage wisdom! Ed

I’m following this Ed to see what the pros recommend.
I’m getting mine serviced next week. Same drivetrain as yours.

Re: Transmission Fluid
Type "A" or type "F" are interchangeable. MOST auto stores have Type F.
