Removing rear wheels on 63’

Post by Marty »

Hey everyone, I’ve completed the front brake upgrade on my 63 (I’ll post updates soon) and looking to service the rear brakes but can’t remove the wheels due to space. Are there any tricks other than when on jack stands using a bottle jack on top of the axel to lower the wheel?

Thank you!

I guess I could put the jack stands on the “frame” in front of the wheels/axel. Seems a little far forward but I assume that would give me enough wheel hang to get in there.

Yea you can jack up that far forward, motor is plenty of counter balance, or even without a motor . After I installed my monoleafs which were a lot stiffer I still couldn't get these wide tires on with suspension dropped so I made up a deal with what I could find on hand ,all-thread, channel metal scraps & a 30 year old virgin speed wrench. I thought about making a better more compact one to put in the trunk but so far I haven't.

it just pushes axle down away from frame rail;

Marty, you must have some oversized tires, I know on our 66 I use a floor jack with two bumper pads on an extension bar (bought at HF). Also lay some 2x or 4x 4 to get extra height. Basically the axle hangs down free, then I can work the tire out fairly easy. I’m running a little bit oversized on the rear, wanna say 235/70/15 (ps rear rubs on bad bumps, it’s rubbing the inner portion of the quarter panel. Thinking of massaging the metal a little when I change the leaf springs, nothing too bad. Might consider dropping to 60s, donno.
Nothing big like Poboys, by the way, quite ingenious with your homemade spring expansion device. I like 👍

I did use the original bumper jack on the rear bumper once, wanted to remind myself how dangerous it was back in the day when we did it all the time.

'just sayin' - the Maverick 8" rear bolted right on, but the '61 small rear wheel well / body panel situation needed practical remedy for modern larger tires :

Front wheel well panel/ lip from a Falcon solved the modern tire fit conundrum :

Thank you, Gents! You were right PoBoy, it had plenty counter balance just moving the jack stands forward some. I hear horror stories of guys getting trapped or pinched so I guess I'm a little cautious sometimes. Genius gadget, I will need to look into that when I put a mini-tub and larger wheels.
