Bracket on front of heater plenum... (purpose?)

Post by kevinshi »

Hey folks -

Does anyone know for what purpose this metal bracket was mounted on the front of heater plenum (see picture and then red arrow to its location on illustration)?

I removed this from my original (cardboard) plenum (65 Caliente convertible). However on the the plastic reproduction part (e.g. here) it is neither included nor are there obvious holes to use for re-mounting.

I can easily add holes to mount to the new plenum… but I'd like to know what exactly the thing is supposed to be doing... I don't see how it could be involved mechanically... there are no hoses down there... I don't think there are any electrical wires that pass down there... the best I can come up with is that this may have been some kind of fitting for the front end of a center console (which my car did not have out of the factory)?

Do you mean in the case there was also factory air conditioning installed?

A theory advanced by Mike Roe (in email) is that this is a stop for the cable swing. Its positioning is consistent with Mikes theory... however it sure seems like *dramatic* overkill for that problem...

Ya factory installed air, maybe. Ive been around these for over 40 years, never seen that bracket.
I have a factory underdash in the garage Ill see if it has a stud in the back of the housing.

They have a stud Fred, but it goes down to the floor for support.

the bracket may be for ac hoses. some 6cyl cars had the hoses exiting thru the pass side firewall,so may have been for those.

Do you have a guess on the rough diameter of that hose?

To me this LOOKS like a fat hose bracket. As in maybe 1.5" diameter hose... if the hose you are thinking of is around that then seems like a really good theory...

(Now why the folks in Lorraine decided to put that in my convertible w/out AC is a mystery...)

Ha! It's kind of random... what is reflected there is my daughter who is looking back over her shoulder at a close friend who is taking the picture... so it's kind of like a group shot of the three of us together. It was taken on his boat on a spectacular sunny day in late July. We were out to see the Blue Angels perform over Lake Washington for Seattle's Seafair weekend. That picture reminds me of a very good time, makes me smile. ;-)

What is that bar thing above the stern of the boat? I took it to be a mast boom on a sailboat.

Wakeboard tower! ... and yes... big ol' speakers... we've spent many days boarding and surfing behind that boat... tons of fun.
