I agree the repops are garbage. The best thing they do is plug that big hole.

If I spend the time reconditioning mine, or happen to find a NOS, can I expect the system to work? (Or are you all telling me that even with everything NOS... the stock setup just didn't work very well?)

Yes absolutely it will work perfectly. Mine does.

I would suggest replacing or at least checking the gauge voltage regulator under the dash and definitely changing the brass float to a solid plastic piece....got that from Amazon.
