'65 Fuel Sending Unit

Post by kevinshi »

Hey folks -

I am trying to sort which fuel sending unit is correct for my 1965 Caliente... as per the below, there are at least three plausibly correct parts..

Which of these is suitable for use in a stock gas tank?
  1. C4GY-9275-A (vertical float) for ~$75.
  2. C8ZZ-9275-CR (horizontal float) for ~$35.
  3. CDZZ-9275-A (horizontal float) for ~$20.
The Mercury Master Parts Catalog indicates part number C4GY-9275-A for all 1965 Comet models (sans station wagon). That part is seemingly hard to find, however Mac's does list a part with this number that has fitment indicating 1964-65 Comet. Per Mac's product image, this part has the float barrel oriented vertically relative to the filter. Price: $74.99. (C&G lists it here for $64.95 but there is no picture.)

However, Mac's also lists an alternative part C8ZZ-9275-CR with fitment data indicating 1960-65 Comet (and 1960-65 Falcon). Per Mac's product image, this part has the float barrel oriented horizontally relative to the filter. Price: $33.99.

Meanwhile the Ford Car Master Parts Catalog indicates part number CDZZ-9275-A for all 1965 Falcon models (sans station wagon). This part number is widely available such as at NPD which indicates fitment matching Ford part numbers 9275-1A, C5ZZ-9275-A, C5ZZ-9275-B, C5ZZ-9275-C, C5ZZ-9275-D, C7ZZ-9275-A, C7ZZ-9275-B, C8ZZ-9275-A, C8ZZ-9275-B, C8ZZ-9275-C, and C8ZZ-9275-D. Per NPD's product image, this part seems to be identical to the second Mac's part - it has the float barrel oriented horizontally relative to the filter. Price: $19.95.

I have always had a troublesome fuel indicator and would really like it to work correctly... so I am highly motivated to get this right.

I just pulled the sender out of my tank. My sender is almost certainly not original (modern metric hex head screws were retaining the hose clamps... ;-)). Mine has the Float orientated horizontally (e.g. it is like the less expensive ones).

Question: Are all of these workable in the '65 or should I really be shelling out the cash to get the correctly oriented float?

(P.S. I am replacing my CVU and will carefully test my gauge in addition to pulling new wiring including carefully checking that I've got a solid chassis ground on this circuit...)

I usually check out Rock Auto first for compatability (and good prices) but they are out of stock on this one. I got one for my 64 Caliente from Ebay, and it was shown as for 64-65 only; which jives with what I've read elsewhere. It matched the one that came out of my 20 gal tank. Here's the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/253567857034

That one looks like my option B and/or C.

I take it that you have found it works fine?

You just had to go and make this even more difficult, eh? :-)

So you motivated me to actually inspect my take-off more carefully. To my surprise it has a FoMoCo stamp with a Comet number - C4GF-9275-A (so it is F, not Y, but I realize that is normal/unsurprising). So it now seems quite likely that my sender is indeed the original. Go figure.

Rebuild:
  • I did a resistance test on it at 200 ohms and its reading ~8 at full and ~52 at empty. Seems reasonable... anyone know whether that is what it is suppose to read?
  • The float arm is not moving smoothly - sometimes it gets stuck in various positions...
  • It actually looks as though someone may have taken it apart...two of the three tabs are not bent into place (and the one that is bent is pretty hoarked)... so this may have already been repaired once before... (actually now that I look more closely... it very clearly has been repaired - a thin washer has been welded on (see bottom picture)... I a guessing the repair was to correct the float arm moving in appropriately or something...).
Any advice on what things to address relative to a rebuild?

(...anyone else had good luck with a reproduction?)

The repo I bought did not read right. I think it read about 3/4 when full. But I got use to it,& it was better for me that way ,I never ran out & probably had plenty when it got down to empty. I've had cars the other way around, that if they got anywhere near E you better be in sight of a gas station.

I searched Melvin's 1960-65 Comets section and I am not finding that they have any fuel senders(?) If you see it there again, would you kindly reply back with their item number?
Thanks,

if you punch in tank sending unit on their search box you will see item# C4GY9275a among others. it says for comet car right under the title but says for ford falcon at the specs after you click on it,(but still says comet car). Or punch in the part number in the searchbox.

another thing about the repopped one is I couldn't get it to seal, finally used the lock & oring from the old one to install it.

Oh geesh. Thanks for the extra help - I found it (item number "C4GY9275A").

I had been searching for "Fuel Sending" and using hyphens in the part number... both of which Melvin's disapproved :-).

Actually, the car hasn't made it outside of the garage yet. I've put 2-3 gal in it to get it going, but it barely moves the needle. Still working on trying to get the ammeter to work. Hopefully in the next week.

don't worry about a gauge,,,put gas in it till it runs out ,,take a rubber hose about a 1/4 in and stick in there and measure it once in awhile   it don't lie !!!....I use a stick on my tractors,,it never lies!!  just kidding,,,,,,have had my 64 close to 30 yrs,,,,you can put every drop of gas in it that it will hold,,turn the key on .it's on or past full mark...by the time you drive from pump needle is half way twix 3/4 and full,,I never sweated it ,,this way I know there is a half a qtr more in it then it reg's after needle gets on empty,,,,and many times I have pushed it and never have ran out of gas....good luck..…...POP

Barry: NOS or bust!
PoBoy/ModelA: Repop and forget about it.
Pop: Just use a stick.

We certainly have a full range of viewpoints represented. :-)

seems like everyone agrees the repro will read wrong. & I wasn't suggesting a repro, just telling you my experience with the one I had. I have since built an aluminum tank with aftermarket sender, that reads wrong  ,same as the repo of the stock one I had. I'm guessing I could get it a little closer by bending the float arm. I keep thinking Groover might chime in on how to adjust the gauge! I think he's the one that did that.

If I spend the time reconditioning mine, or happen to find a NOS, can I expect the system to work? (Or are you all telling me that even with everything NOS... the stock setup just didn't work very well?)
